Me and My Parrot
Parakeets, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and more
This website is named after my company, A Step Up Bird Co. (you teach your parrot to "step up"). My name is Jill and birds are a big part of my life.
My love of birds all began when I was three years old and in a May Company Department store with my mother. I saw a fake parrot that had a pull cord and sat on a perch and said "hello" when you pulled the cord. It was love at first sight.
To make a long story short, it was Christmas a few days later and I was wishing for that toy bird. However, much to my dismay, I received a doll in a stroller. It was a pretty doll, but I said to myself, I will someday own a parrot of my own...and that is where we begin.
When I was six we went to a local pet store and purchased a green budgie. In 1967, most of the parakeets were wild caught, so green parakeets were readily available. We named him Peanuts. He flew free everyday in my room and lived in a nice sized cage.
Unfortunately, he only lived for 7 years. We fed him parakeet seed from the local supermarket and not many people realized the importance of good nutrition for birds. Today, we realize a good diet is key to a bird's health and longevity.
It has been a learning experience, but in a wonderful way.
I regret that it has been quite awhile since I made entries on these pages. My beloved 17 year-old son passed away in a car accident a little over a year ago. Thank you for your understanding. His memorial site is at http://www.abbeyworldmedia.com/matt.html Jill.. Dec. 2009
On Thursday, July 15, 2010, Jill A. Cooke (the author of this site) succumbed to grief and desperation, and took her own life. Words cannot express our sorrow. She has fulfilled her wish to join her son in heaven. May God have mercy on her soul.

Letter from Jon LaLanne (son of Jack LaLanne) 17 Feb 2011:
I always remember my day with Matt and Jill making his new surfboard. I remember the days we lost them. They do not get to rest in peace like the contract said, because my father is now busting their chops up beyond the gates. Matt.. no more cokes, burgers and french fries. Matt.. you now have to study and get straight A's. Jill now has to do aerobics at 4 a.m. for 2 hours every week day morning. Sorry Matt and Jill, we tried to keep my father down here as long as possible. We love and miss you all greatly.
Matt and Jill, if you're up there, please send a parrot my way from up above. I'll be waiting patiently down here.
