Budgie won't share seeds.

by Michelle
(Fredericton New Brunswick Canada)

Hi my name is Michelle, my boyfriend and I bought a budgie last year for our existing budgie to bond with. We can see there is obvious tension between the two budgies but for the majority of the time they seem to get along. They are now in the same area and don't live caged. They are allowed to fly around as they please.

However it seems as though the new budgie likes to keep the older one from eating. Chasing him away from the food dishes and treats. There is always food and quite often treats so lack of food is not a problem. The older budgie does get to eat but he really has to fight to do so.

Please help us as we love both our budgies....has anyone encountered a problem like this before?? Please help.

Dear Michelle:

I have heard of some budgie owners having their bird food in separate dishes for separate budgies. Maybe you should do the same. Budgies are also known to bicker amongst themselves. Just like human siblings in one house. My too budgies fought over food sometimes, especially when they were hungry, and the bigger one always won. However, when the bigger budgie was done eating he let the other eat next.

What you could do is fast both budgies for a while (3 / 6 hours) and then feed the newer one in the normal feeding spot. Then show the older one a separate dish in a separate spot for him to eat. Do not let the newer one come over to the new feeding spot, otherwise he might think he can eat in both spots. Do this every day for a couple of days until your birds seem to be used to the schedule. Then you can continue feeding them in separate spots but you don't have to fast them.

The reason you should fast them is so that both birds are hungry at the same time so you can feed them at the same time. The newer bird can't be in both places at once.

What sex are they?
by: Norm at the office

Hi. Do you know what sex they are? That could have some effect. Take a look at Jill's response to a somewhat similar question in Budgie Blog 4. You can find it on the left column navbar.

Fighting over Food...
by: Anonymous

Hi,
I haven't found this problem with my 3 but have noticed the behavior between Hummingbirds. They are terrifically territorial. Sounds like the new Budgie is behaving the same. Try another set of food dishes in another area. Introduce the old Budgie to the new setting and hopefully he'll make it his own.
Good luck.
