2 male cockatiels and 1 female?

by Cheryl
(Canada)

I currently have one male cockatiel, and I have had him for a good 6 years now, and unfortunately, he lost his mate back in December (we miss her dearly.) and he has become rather lonely. He has gotten very attached to me, the problem is I am not home very often, so its not fair to him.

I was recently at the pet store and found two 7 year old mated cockatiels which were left there by someone who didn't want them. The pet store has them for sale and I was thinking of purchasing them beings how the employees at the store highly doubt the birds will go to a good home, especially since they don't seem to be friendly towards people. Both are in great condition, they just lack human attention.
My question is, would the two males get along with each other? I know there would be some squawking and bickering, but considering there would only be one female I don't want them to attack each other and fight over her. Obviously the two males would be in separate cages, and the mated pair would stay together.
Is it possible for two males to get along with only one female?

Yes Cheryl you can have two males together, and a female also. Cockatiels are known to be very mellow birds in nature (except when they play around!) so they usually get along with either sex and will not mind each other.

However that is the general idea. One cockatiel might be non-typical and be aggressive with other birds. Each bird has his own personality so you can never be 100 % sure. But I would say it?s a safe bet, and a very good thing for you to take in unwanted birds.

As for caging, you can have them in separate cages if you wish. Or you could try putting them all together and just see if they will get along. But don?t throw them together right away. Place the two cages next to each other for a couple of days just to see how they act. Then if you think they will be fine put them together.

You also have to worry about sicknesses in the other two cockatiels. Make sure they aren?t sick and ask why the previous owners did not want them.
